Dog Collar Safety: What Every Pet Parent Should Know

At Little Barks Boutique, we love pretty collars as much as anyone. A sweet floral print, a soft cotton fabric, a tiny bow—it’s hard to resist dressing our dogs in something that feels as special as they are.

But before style comes safety.

This is one of those topics that every dog owner should know about, because a collar is something most of our pups wear every day. Used properly, collars are an important way to keep identification on your dog. In certain situations, though, they can pose risks that many pet parents don’t realize.

Dogs Should Wear Collars Only When Supervised

This may surprise some people, especially if your dog wears a collar all the time.

As a general rule, collars should be removed when your dog is:

  • Resting in a crate

  • Home alone and unsupervised

  • Playing with other dogs

  • Roughhousing indoors or outdoors

The reason is simple: collars can get caught.

That might mean an ID tag snagging on crate wires, or one dog’s jaw becoming stuck in another dog’s collar during play. While these situations are uncommon, they can become dangerous very quickly.

The Experience That Changed My Mind

For years, I believed dogs should always wear their collars.

Then one day, my own dog’s ID tag became caught in the wire of his crate.

Thankfully, I was nearby and able to help immediately. But the experience was enough to make me rethink how and when collars should be worn.

Since then, I’ve become much more intentional about collar safety, and I always encourage other pet parents to do the same.

Why Playtime Can Be Risky

Dogs naturally grab, tug, and wrestle when they play.

If one dog gets a tooth or jaw caught under another dog’s collar, panic can set in fast. Both dogs may struggle, which can lead to choking or injury.

For this reason, many trainers and experienced pet owners remove collars before dogs play together.

If your dog visits parks, daycare, or has frequent playdates, this is an especially important habit to adopt.

A Safer Alternative: Breakaway Collars

If you feel uneasy about your dog wearing no collar at all, breakaway collars are worth considering.

These collars look much like traditional flat collars, but they are designed to release if they become snagged on something.

Modern breakaway collars have improved significantly over the years. Many now include dual D-rings that allow you to attach a leash securely during walks, while still preserving the breakaway feature for everyday wear.

Another Helpful Option: Embroidered Identification

One simple way to reduce risk is to skip dangling ID tags altogether.

Collars with embroidered contact information place your dog’s name and your phone number directly on the collar. This eliminates the chance of tags becoming caught on crate wires, heating vents, or other objects.

Safety and Style Can Go Hand in Hand

At Little Barks Boutique, we believe pet products should be both beautiful and thoughtfully designed.

A collar is more than an accessory. It is a tool that helps keep your dog safe, identified, and comfortable. Knowing when to use it—and when to remove it—is one of the best ways to protect your pup.

Our Simple Rule of Thumb

If you are watching your dog, a properly fitted collar with current identification is a wonderful choice.

If your dog is crated, home alone, or playing with other dogs, it is safest to remove the collar.

A few seconds to unbuckle a collar can provide valuable peace of mind.

Because at the end of the day, nothing matters more than keeping our best friends safe, happy, and loved.
